Keith Ardinger documented this 1982, two-day railfan trip organized by a group from the San Francisco bay area. He arrived at Cobre, the Southern Pacific interchange with the NN, by bus from Salt Lake City on 29 May. Nevada Northern SD-7 No. 401 powered the excursion run to East Ely on that Saturday. The three coaches immediately behind the engine were in "Sierra Western" livery, believed to be the moniker used by the San Francisco-based tour promoter. The fourth car was Nevada Northern chair car No.5, the former Pullman sleeper Silesia, followed by NN baggage car No. 20, the final unit of the 5-car train. The next day, Sunday 30 May, KCC RS-3 No. 109 took the rail enthusiasts on a round-trip between East Ely and the copper pits over the mines branch. "I jumped off while they wyed the train at the pit shops, and got that view of the semaphore" (below, left).
