Ingoldsby 500, 600, and 700 Series Ore Cars |
500
Series Ingoldsby 12-Latch Steel Ore Cars
|
The
500 Series of cars were built by The Pullman Car Co. They were outside
dump with two longitudinal bottom drop doors that were 10½ feet in length.
The car's dimensions were 27 feet 6 inches over the ends, 9 feet 6 inches
in height (top of car to top of rail), and 10 feet 2¼ inches wide. As
delivered to Nevada Northern Ry Co. they had arch bar trucks with Simplex
bolsters, 5½ x 10-inch journals, and were equipped with K-D brakes. They
had a capacity of 120,000 lbs.
|
The
door raising mechanism was hand-operated gears. These gears moved two
large levers by means of associated link chains. The movement of these
two levers, which in turn were connected to long shafts, provided the
mechanical means to raise the doors. The doors were opened by means of
two levers, one on each side of the car. Each lever had associated linkage,
which was connected to the door's latches. Movement of this lever would
either engage or disengage the door's latches. ICC Valuation entry for
car #540 indicates a length of 27' 7" and a width of 9' 4". Visually the
same as an 800 Series car (see the A.C.F. photo of C&S car #20150).

KCC No. 612 Ingoldsby
car with sealed bottom. Appears to have been fitted with a 6-inch height extender. Vulcan trucks. |
|
KCC No. 670 Ingoldsby
car with sealed bottom. Car #670 is riding on an original Arch Bar truck on one end (left) and an early version of a Vulcan truck at the other end (right). The Vulcan trucks on the Ingoldsby cars remaining at Ely today have flat top side frames, and some have "VULCAN" embossed along the bottom of the side frame. In contrast, the top of the side frame on this early version of a Vulcan truck is a curved arch and "VULCAN" is embossed along the top of the side frame. It appears that the slope sheets have been removed, changed, or altered and the ends now have near vertical sheets of metal with angle bracing. The doors appear to have been removed along with all of the door releasing and raising equipment, as can be seen in the 3/4 view. This was the door operator's end. The removed parts were probably scraped. This car has been fitted with a 6 inch height extender. Because of the extent of the modifications required to perform the "sealing" process it would make an "unsealing" process a very expensive, but not necessarily an impossible process. However, if all of the same modifications were done to all 500-600-700 series "sealed" cars, as was performed on car #670, I seriously doubt that a "unsealing" process was ever performed on a previously "sealed" Ingoldsby car. |

The
700 Series of cars were nearly identical to the 500 Series. The ICC Valuation
sheet for Nevada Northern Railway car #702 indicates the car had Vulcan
trucks. Visually the same as an 800 Series car (see the A.C.F. photo of
C&S car #20150).

Bottoms were sealed on 25 random cars and renumbered as 700 through 724 to reflect this modification. The remaining 25 unsealed cars renumbered as 750 through 774. Most of the 700-724 cars were assigned to KCCCo. in Arizona and New Mexico. All of the 750-774 cars were assigned to KCCCo. in Arizona and New Mexico. |
