Chapter 4
Ingoldsby 1000 and 1200 Series Ore Cars

1000 Series Ingoldsby 14-Latch Steel Ore Cars with Air Actuators
Built by the Pullman Car Co. for the Ray & Gila Valley Railroad (R&GV). They were outside dump with two longitudinal bottom drop doors that were 15 feet 1 inch in length and 36 inches in width (measurements made by the author from car #1034 at East Ely, NV). The car dimensions (as measured on car #1082 at East Ely) are 31 feet 3 inches over the ends, 9 feet 4 inches in height (top of car to top of rail), and 10 feet 3 inches in width. All of the remaining 1000 Series cars at East Ely, NV are equipped with Vulcan trucks.
The 1000 Series of cars was similar to the 500-600-700-800 Series cars except they are longer and instead of the 12 latches they have 14. In addition, these cars have been fitted with two air actuators that aid in the raising of the doors. These air actuators could also be used to provide delayed dumping by the engineer from the cab of the locomotive. (Delayed unloading was normally used for ballast unloading and probably not utilized with these particular cars.)
Each air actuator is approximately 52 inches long. The top half is 5 inches in diameter and the bottom half is 6½ inches in diameter. The air enters and exits at the bottom. These actuators are located behind the slope sheet at the door operator's platform end and are angled slightly upwards towards the center of the car.
The location of these air actuators, along with the other Ingoldsby patented mechanisms at the operator's platform can be seen in the end view of car #1089.

Notes: The Ray Consolidated Copper Co. (RCCCo.) from 1908 to 1926, Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. (NCCCo.) -- Ray Mines Division from 1926 to 1943, Kennecott Consolidated Copper (KCC) -- Ray Mines Division after 1943. The name changes didn't necessarily mean a change of ownership, only reorganization within the Guggenheim companies.

String of Ore Cars
McGill, NV, 08 November 1965

Left to right: Minneapolis & St. Louis hopper, sealed Ingoldsby ore car, sealed Bingham & Garfield hopper, M &St.L. hopper, KCC #3004, KCC #3070, and unsealed 1000 series Ingoldsby ore car. Notice the difference in the length and number of panels between the Ingoldsby at the penultimate left position (either a 500, 600 or 700 series car) and the 14-latch (7 per side) Ingoldsby ore car at the far right. This establishes the transfer (of at least one) of the 1000-series cars from the KCC Ray Mines Division, AZ to the Nevada Mines Division by 1965.

1100 Series Ingoldsby Ore Cars
As of this writing there is no evidence of any Ingoldsby ore cars being numbered or re-numbered to provide for an 1100 Series.

1200 Series Ingoldsby 12-Latch Steel Ore Cars with Air Actuators

The 1200 Series was built by Koppel Industrial Car & Equipment Co. in Koppel, PA (see notes) possibly by authorization of Enterprise Co., as they presumably controlled the pertinent Ingoldsby patents at that time. They have incorporated all the attributes of the NCCCo. Magor car #900 with the following major modifications:

(1) air actuators added (one per side) to aid in door raising;
(2) a decrease in overall height of approximately 6-7 inches;
(3) modification of door raising linkage bar and associated link chains;
(4) the utilization of a vertical brake wheel on the operator's platform end, vice the ratcheting handle type shown on the Magor car's opposite end; and
(5) the flooring on the car's platform ends are steel plate instead of wood boards that are depicted in the drawing.
The air actuators, essentially the same type as the 1000 Series cars, could also be used to provide delayed dumping by the engineer from the cab of the locomotive. (Delayed unloading was normally used for ballast unloading and probably not utilized with these particular cars.)
The location of the air actuator(s) along with the other mechanisms at the operator's platform can be seen in these views of car #1219.
The date of manufacture for this series of cars is uncertain at this time. All of the remaining 1200 series cars at East Ely, NV are equipped with Vulcan trucks.

Notes:
(1) Two of the cars (#1216 and #1219) at East Ely, NV exhibit a builder's plaque (plate) from the Koppel Industrial Car & Equipment Co., Koppel, PA.
(2) In 1907, German manufacturer Orenstein-Koppel Co. established a plant in what is now Koppel, PA. Their assets were confiscated by the U.S. Government in 1917. Emerged as Koppel Industrial Car & Equipment Co. which became a division of the Pressed Steel Car Co. sometime between 1923 and 1928.
